ISWAP Threat Prompts Heightened Security Alert Across Southwest

Authorities in Ondo State have intensified security surveillance following intelligence reports warning of a planned series of coordinated attacks by suspected members of the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP).

According to an internal Department of State Services (DSS) communication dated 20 October 2025, intelligence sources revealed that ISWAP operatives have been making preparations to target several communities in Ondo and Kogi States. The confidential memo, addressed to the Brigade Commander of the 32 Artillery Brigade in Akure, indicated that security agencies have tracked early signs of surveillance activity around identified locations.

Communities listed as potential targets within Ondo State include Eriti Akoko, Oyin Akoko in Akoko North West Local Government Area, and Owo town in Owo LGA. The DSS noted that these areas may have been mapped out due to perceived vulnerabilities, prompting concerns over possible attacks “anytime soon.”

Security officials, according to the memo, believe the group has already begun monitoring “soft targets” in the affected locations. This has led to urgent calls for increased security presence and vigilance among residents, local authorities, and community networks.

The directive urged immediate coordination between military units, local security outfits, and community leaders to prevent “any untoward situation.” It emphasized the need for proactive measures rather than reactive responses, stressing that early intervention remains key to averting potential threats.

Although the DSS has not released a public statement, the internal communication—signed on behalf of the State Director of Security, Ondo State—reinforces the federal government’s growing concerns about extremist movements attempting to expand their activities across parts of the Southwest.

Security experts say the warning underscores ongoing challenges in preventing extremist infiltration into quieter communities, urging residents to remain calm but extremely alert. They also encourage the public to report suspicious activities immediately to relevant security agencies.

As the intelligence community steps up monitoring operations, authorities are assuring residents that preventive actions are underway and that all possible measures are being taken to protect communities across the state.
