Catholic Diocese of Nsukka Issues Disclaimer on Arise Television Report

The Catholic Diocese of Nsukka has refuted a report aired by Arise Television on 27 November 2025, alleging that two priests—Very Rev. Fr. John Igwebueze and Rev. Fr. Matthew Eya—were murdered by armed members of IPOB and ESN.
In an official statement signed by the Director of Communications, Fr. Emmanuel I. Asadu, the Diocese clarified that the claims are inaccurate and misleading.

According to the Diocese, Fr. John Igwebueze was not murdered. He had been battling a prolonged illness since June 2012 and passed away peacefully on 21 September 2025 at Bishop Shanahan Hospital, Nsukka. His death, the statement stressed, was strictly due to health complications.
Regarding Rev. Fr. Matthew Eya, the Diocese confirmed that he was shot and killed on 19 September 2025 by yet-to-be-identified assailants while returning to his parish after a pastoral assignment. Security agencies are still investigating the incident, and no group or individual has claimed responsibility.
The Church appealed to the media and the general public to exercise caution and accuracy when reporting sensitive issues, urging journalists to avoid linking unrelated incidents or spreading unverified information. It also called on anyone with credible information that may aid the investigation into Fr. Eya’s murder to assist security agencies.
The Diocese extended its condolences to the families of both priests and assured them of continuous prayers.
For further inquiries, the public is advised to contact the Office of the Director of Communications, Catholic Diocese of Nsukka.
