Until now, No member state of the United Nations had recognized Somaliland’s 1991 declaration of independence from Somalia, and most of the international community (including the African Union, EU states, the UK, US, China, etc.) continue to regard Somaliland as part of Somalia.
However, the global position changed on 26 December 2025, when the Republic of Somaliland was formally recognized as an independent sovereign state by only one United Nations member country, The State of Israel. Thus, establishing diplomatic relations with the People and government of Somaliland.
Following PM Netanyahu's leadership (Israelis longest governing Prime Minister) US President Trump is set to lead the United States to recognize Somaliland as an independent country; and with that, will lead the rest of the world to follow The United States of America.
