Bandits Demand 17 Motorcycles in Exchange for Abducted Individuals in Kaduna, Prompting Mass Exodus of Residents
Gunmen abducted 177 Christian worshippers from three churches in Kurmin Wali, Kajuru LGA of southern Kaduna, during a coordinated attack on January 18, 2026, triggering mass panic and displacement. After initial denials by state and police authorities, the Nigeria Police later confirmed the abductions.
Eleven victims escaped, but 166 people—mostly women and children—remain in captivity. Instead of demanding immediate ransom, the abductors are insisting that 17 motorcycles, allegedly lost during recent military operations, be replaced first—valued at about ₦28.9 million—before ransom talks begin.
Residents have fled the community, schools and farms are shut, and markets deserted due to fear. Community leaders confirmed contact with the kidnappers, who accuse villagers of stealing or damaging the motorcycles. The village head was among those abducted but later escaped; his family remains captive.
Military sources linked the attack to bandits fleeing intensified operations in nearby areas. Troops have rescued three victims, destroyed several camps, and remain on alert, though operations are hindered by dense forests and poor infrastructure.
