He added that Nigerians should enjoy equal rights anywhere in the country without being classified as “non-indigenes” where they live or work.
Amaechi argued that identity politics based on ethnicity, religion, and region has weakened national cohesion. He said federal character exists only because the system is unfair.
This isn’t new for him. As Rivers governor in 2014, he announced he didn’t believe in non-indigeneship and said anyone living in Rivers for 5+ years should be treated as an indigene.
Critics like Dr. Josef Onoh have said abolishing indigeneship would require constitutional amendment, since indigeneship is tied to state-level rights under Sections 25-32 of the 1999 Constitution, while citizenship is national under Chapter III.
Amaechi is running against other ADC aspirants for the 2027 ticket. He’s said he doesn’t want to be vice president.
