In 1791, enslaved Africans in Haiti did what no one in history had done before. They picked up weapons, fought back, and defeated three of the most powerful European empires on earth — France, Spain, and Britain — all at the same time.

By 1804, Haiti became the first Black republic in the world.
Here is what the history books leave out:

• Napoleon’s entire plan for a French empire in the Americas collapsed because of Haiti. He sold the Louisiana Territory to the United States shortly after. The map of America exists the way it does today because enslaved Africans in Haiti defeated Napoleon.

• Colonial powers were so terrified of Haiti’s success that they isolated the nation economically and diplomatically from the moment of independence.

• France forced Haiti to pay 150 million gold francs — ten times the country’s entire annual revenue — as “compensation” to former slave owners for the loss of their “property.” Haiti had to borrow from French banks to pay it.

• Haiti finished paying that debt in 1947. 122 years after winning its freedom.
Think about that. Haiti won the war. Then spent over a century paying for having the nerve to win it.
The poverty you see in Haiti today did not happen by accident. It was engineered.

This is the story every Black person on earth should know — because it tells you everything about how the world responds when Black people refuse to stay in chains.
What do you think the world owes Haiti?
