Enugu Prison Holds 482 Ebonyi Indigenes on Death Row, Government Seeks Pardons

Abakaliki, Ebonyi State – Ebonyi State Government has revealed that 482 of its indigenes are currently on death row at Enugu Maximum Security Prison, the highest for any state in Nigeria. While some inmates were rightfully convicted, the government is reviewing cases with a view to securing pardons.
The disclosure was made by Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr. Ben Uruchi Odoh, during the “Civic Catalyst, HAG Open Forum 2.0”. He confirmed that the Ministry of Justice is profiling inmates and has submitted applications to the Governor for possible clemency.

Dr. Odoh cited past successful interventions, including amnesty and de-radicalization for 159 warlords from the Effium conflict and the release of 109 combatants from the Edda crisis, funded by the Governor’s wife, Mrs. Mary Maudlin Nwifuru.
He also highlighted reforms under his leadership, including the establishment of the Multi-Door Court House, Citizens Mediation Centre, and Office of the Public Defender, aimed at reducing litigation, empowering indigents, and enhancing justice delivery across the state.
> “Litigation is not the only way to achieve justice. Our mediation centres and legal initiatives ensure fairness and access for all,” Dr. Odoh said.
