Nigeria continues to be described by Christian advocacy groups as the deadliest country in the world for followers of Jesus Christ.
3,490 Killed in Nigeria
According to Open Doors’ World Watch List 2026, at least 4,849 Christians were killed for their faith worldwide, and 3,490 of those deaths occurred in Nigeria—more than in all other countries combined. Open Doors reports that attacks have been carried out by extremist groups such as Boko Haram, Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), and radicalized militant groups operating in parts of the country.
Christian communities in northern and central Nigeria have endured killings, kidnappings, church attacks, displacement, and years of insecurity. Open Doors has called Nigeria “the most violent place in the world for Christians” for several years.
At the same time, analysts note that Nigeria’s violence is complex, involving terrorism, banditry, ethnic conflict, and disputes over land and resources, and that many Muslims have also been victims of these attacks. Yet Christian leaders continue to raise urgent concerns about the heavy toll persecution has taken on believers in parts of the country.
As Christians, we are called not only to be aware of the suffering of our brothers and sisters but also to pray for them, support them, and remember that the Church continues to stand firm even under intense persecution.
