Armed Bandits Kill 15 at Mosque in Northwest Nigeria

A group of gunmen killed at least 15 people at a mosque in Nigeria's Zamfara state, residents said on Saturday.

The attack in the local government area of Bukkuyum occurred during Friday prayers at a Friday mosque in Ruwan Jema City, three residents told Reuters.

"The armed bandits came on a motorbike with guns and went straight into the mosque and started shooting at us blindly," said a resident named Amimu Mustapha.

Another resident, who asked not to be identified, said the attack occurred at around 14:00 local time. He added that there were many injuries.

A Zamfara state police official did not immediately respond to Reuters' request to confirm the residents' reports.

In August, residents of Ruwan Jema admitted to giving the bandits 9 million naira or Rp 311 million, fuel and cigarettes so that the bandits would not disturb them
