A fresh wave of violence has shaken Unguwar Gishir community in Malumfashi Local Government Area of Katsina State, after suspected bandits launched a late-night assault on Sunday, abducting several residents and looting valuables despite an alleged peace arrangement between local leaders and armed groups operating in the region.
Residents said the attackers stormed the community under the cover of darkness, firing sporadically and moving from house to house while residents fled for safety. Several villagers were reportedly taken away by the gunmen, while numerous homes were ransacked and stripped of valuables during the raid.
The incident has sparked renewed outrage and fear among locals, particularly because it occurred in an area where community leaders had reportedly entered into a fragile peace agreement with armed groups believed to be responsible for earlier attacks.
Security analyst Bakatsine, in a public alert issued on Monday, confirmed the incident and warned that the security situation across several communities in Malumfashi LGA has deteriorated dramatically over the past week.
According to the alert, rising tension has forced residents in some affected areas to suspend Friday congregational prayers, an unusual and alarming step that reflects the growing fear of fresh attacks.
Among those abducted during the latest raid is a young man whose wedding ceremony had been scheduled for March 20, a development residents described as heartbreaking for the family and the wider community.
The tragedy carries an even deeper emotional burden for the victim’s household. About three years ago, the groom-to-be’s father was also abducted by bandits. He reportedly developed paralysis after being released, a condition family members attribute to the severe physical and psychological trauma he endured while in captivity.
Residents now say the latest attack has exposed the fragility—and possible failure—of the much-talked-about peace arrangement between community stakeholders and armed groups. Many fear the agreement may have provided only temporary relief while leaving communities vulnerable to renewed violence.
The raid has once again intensified the debate over Nigeria’s controversial strategy of negotiating with bandits, with critics arguing that such deals may embolden criminal groups rather than bring lasting security.
As fear spreads across Malumfashi and surrounding communities, residents are calling for urgent and decisive government intervention to prevent further attacks and restore confidence in the region’s already fragile security situation.
